Position Summary
The Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) hires students to tutor biology and chemistry. If you have experience helping your friends with tough homework or test questions, or you simply want to help other students excel in various biology or chemistry courses, we want you!

What courses do I need?
We are looking for the following courses:
  • Track I: Biology 201, 202, 203, 204, and some upper-division biology courses
  • Track II: Biology 201, 202, 237, 238, 239, 247, 248, and 249
  • We also ask that you have taken some lower-level Chemistry courses
  • Chem 111, 112, 121, 122, 212, 301, and 302
  • We also prefer that you have at least one of the following: Chem 253, 311, 312, 315
  • Although you must also have Biology 201 and 202, if you have 203 and 204, thats even better!

What's your incentive?

What's the catch?
  • You must be available in the morning and early afternoons (generally between 9am to 2pm); this is when we experience a rush of students wanting help and when we have the biggest deficit of tutors
  • You must apply for work study each semester, however you do not need to qualify for work study to be a Tutor or SI Leader.
  • You must be available for pre-semester training (week before classes start)
  • You must be available for Friday meetings from 3-5pm
  • You must be able to work between 10-20 hours / week

To Apply
This is the absolute minimum we'll need to start the hiring process:
  • A completed application available through UNM Jobs
  • An unofficial transcript
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with your work in the Biology/Chemistry Department
  • Grades of at least a B (not B-) in your previous Biology/Chemistry classes
  • A Cummulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Be eligible as a student employee per UNM Student Employment. Information is available at http://www.unm.edu/~wsestudy/

How do I apply for work study?
  • You must have completed a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the current semester; visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov to apply online.
  • Request a work study award by checking "yes" in the appropriate box on your FAFSA.
  • Contact the "Apply to" person named in the Job Request and arrange an interview.
  • Take a copy of the Job Request with you to the interview.
