Position Summary
The Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) is currently searching for eligible candidates to hire as tutors for various languages and multi-disciplinary fields this Fall 2008 semester. If you have experience helping your friends with tough homework or test questions, or you simply want to help other students excel in their courses, we want you!

We currently offer tutoring in the following areas as part of our Language/MD section: Anthropology, Chinese, Economics, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Management, Music Theory, Navajo, Psychology, Sociology, Spanish, and Portuguese.

What courses do I need?
We are looking for a combination of the following courses:
  • At least 200 level courses in the area you wish to tutor or be a native speaker of the language you wish to tutor. For example, if you would like to tutor a language, we would ask for 101, 102, 201, and 202. If you're interested in Economics, we'll ask for 105, 106, 300, and 303.

What's your incentive?

What's the catch?
  • You must be available in the morning and early afternoons (generally between 9am to 2pm); this is when we experience a rush of students wanting help and when we have the biggest deficit of tutors
  • You must apply for work study each semester, however you do not need to qualify for work study to be a Tutor or SI Leader.
  • You must be available for pre-semester training (week before classes start)
  • You must be available for Friday meetings from 3-5pm
  • You must be able to work between 10-20 hours / week

To Apply
This is the absolute minimum we'll need to start the hiring process:
  • A completed application (also available at the CAPS office)
  • An unofficial transcript
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with your work in the Department
  • Grades of at least a B (not B-) in your previous classes
  • Be eligible as a student employee per UNM Student Employment. Information is available at http://www.unm.edu/~wsestudy/

How do I apply for work study?
  • You must have completed a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the current semester; visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov to apply online.
  • Request a work study award by checking "yes" in the appropriate box on your FAFSA.
  • Contact the "Apply to" person named in the Job Request and arrange an interview.
  • Take a copy of the Job Request with you to the interview.
  • Return signed workstudy referral to the student employment office with proper I9 documentation.
  • Visit the UNM Student Employment Office for more information.
