CAPS Student Employees Recognition


CAPS student employees are recognized both on- and off- campus for their multitude of achievements. We are proud of their accomplishments thus far, and are privileged to be working with such an outstanding group. Take a glimpse into the extraordinary!

Spotlight on...

Brett Elwell

Brett Elwell, who in addition to being a Writing SI leader and a veteran Writing & Language Tutor is also a graduating senior in Creative Writing, has been accepted to the Teach for America Program for the Fall of 2010. Sincere congratulation to Brett from a program that will be sorry to lose him. We're certain that he'll be an amazing resource for the students who he'll be working with in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Tre Mak

Tre Mak, a veteran CAPS Chemistry/Biology tutor, was accepted into the University of New Mexico Pharmacy program for 2009. Tre began tutoring for CAPS in the Fall 2005. He interviewed at a few different Pharmacy schools, but chose to stay close to home, where he will continue working at CAPS as he navigates through his Pharm degree!

Amjad Musleh

Amjad Musleh, a CAPS Chemistry/Biology tutor and Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader, was accepted to the University of New Mexico Medical School for 2009. Amjad began as a Chem/Bio tutor in fall 2005 and then made a switch to SI at CAPS the following semester. Amjad helped to develop and expand the SI program during his 3 years at CAPS.

Samuel Martinez

Samuel Martinez, CAPS tutor/SI leader for Chemistry and Biology was accepted to the MCAT+ summer program for 2009. MCAT+ is a program for New Mexico residents who are preparing to take the MCAT and apply to medical school. Out of 100 applicants only 10 were accepted to the program. Way to go Sam!

Andrew J. Rivers

Andrew J. Rivers PhD recently interviewed for the Spring 2009 issue of Mirage magazine, UNM's alumni magazine, was one of CAPS best! He was a Teaching Assistant at the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) from January 1995 to May 1999. He resigned to complete his dissertation, received his PhD in 2000, and went on to teach at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While at CAPS, he tutored physics and astronomy and served as the team leader/coordinator for the CAPS Physics Team. Congratulations, Andy, on the article and your success.

Joshua Island

Joshua Island, former CAPS physics tutor, recently accepted an offer from Concordia in Montreal where he will be working in a Nanoelectronics lab. Until his program begins, Josh is teaching English to professionals in China. Joshua worked as a Physics tutor at CAPS for 3 years, during which he also assumed the role of Team Leader and Liaison for the Physics Team.

Norma Wells

Norma Wells, a former CAPS receptionist, was a member of the winning team at the annual WERC Environmental Design competition - a national challenge for engineering undergrads. Norma, Shelly Karlin, Toi Carden and Danielle Rivera placed first on their task, which was sulfate removal from groundwater.

Julio Romero

Julio Romero, a CAPS student employee and SI Leader, received one of three prestigious Awards for Outstanding SI Leader presented on behalf of the International Center for Supplemental Instruction and the University of Missouri of Kansas City (UMKC). This award acknowledges the extraordinary commitment Julio has made to SI and the positive success he has created in CAPS' SI program. Julio was selected as one of three recipients for this prestigous award from among hundreds of nominees. The award will be presented to Julio at the upcoming 5th International Conference on SI to be held May 2008 in Orlando, Florida.
