How to be a Good Tutee

CAPS offers both individual scheduled appointments with a tutor AND drop-in tutoring labs in selected subjects. To make an appointment please call us at 277-7205 or visit the CAPS office on the Third floor of Zimmerman Library.

If you wish to notify your instructor of your visit to CAPS please request an Instructor Notification Form at the CAPS Reception Desk.

  • Be Prepared! Attend class, read assigned material, and attempt homework problems before your appointment.

  • Schedule a maximum of two appointments per day; please don't make them back to back.

  • Log in and Log out for your individual appointment with a tutor.

    • To Log In: 1) Enter your student ID number; 2) Your tutor will continue the log in process.

  • Cancel Appointments if you cannot make them. If you are unable to keep your individual appointment, please call CAPS at 277-7205 as soon as possible to cancel. If you do not call before the time of your appointment, you will be recorded as a "No Show."

  • Understand CAPS "No Show" Policy. If you are marked as a "No Show" for three scheduled individual appointments in one semester, CAPS scheduling program "blocks" you. You will be denied services for at least one week.

  • Follow CAPS policy regarding food and drink - closed beverage containers and small snack foods ONLY.

  • Please do not bring your children to your tutoring session. CAPS does not allow children in the tutoring area. Also please be aware of Zimmerman's policy on Unattended Children.

  • Turn off your cell phone while you are in the CAPS area - both the tutoring and lobby areas.

  • Participate in Tutor Evaluations! In order to improve our services, CAPS will sometimes ask for written feedback on our program. Please assist us by completing evaluations when we ask.

It is important to understand CAPS's style of tutoring in order to fully benefit from it.

  • It may seem at first that the tutor is asking all the questions and providing no answers...

  • The tutors are trained to first ask questions of the tutee in order to understand what part of the learning process they are having difficulty with. They then ask more questions to help guide the student through these difficulties. Tutors will offer tips and advice to support the student's learning throughout the session.

  • The goal of the CAPS tutor is not to give tutees all the answers... but to help students to think through their difficulties successfully and independently.

  • A few minutes will be set aside at the end of each session for the tutee to summarize what has been accomplished. This not only helps tutors confirm that the tutee understands all that was covered, but also helps the tutee to review new concepts.
