Correlation & Least Squares Regression on the TI-83
Note: To compute the correlation, the diagnostic setting must be turned on. To do this, press 2nd, then 0, this takes you to the catalog. Scroll down to the "DiagnosticOn" entry and then press ENTER twice. This is the only time you will have to do this.- To find the least squares regression line, press STAT, highlight "CALC", and press 4.
- The regression defaults are for L1 and L2, so if your X variable is in L1 and your Y variable is in L2, then you can press ENTER. If you X variable is in L3 and your Y variable is in L4, then you mus type in "L3, L4" after "LinReg(ax+b)", and press ENTER.
- To graph the line on a scatterplot, press Y =, then VARS, then 5 for statistics. Use the Right Arrow key to highlight "EQ", and press 1 (or ENTER). Finally, press GRAPH.
- To predict a value of Y given a particular X value, press VARS, then use the Right Arrow key to highlight "Y - VARS". Next, press 1, and then press 1 again. "Y1" should now be entered into the Home screen. To find the predicted value of Y for X = 32, put the 32 value in the parentheses after Y1 and press ENTER - Y1(32).
