Welcome to CAPS
Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) is the University of New Mexico's learning assistance center.
Recent News:
CAPS houses the Tutoring Program, Supplemental Instruction (SI), Online Services and the Writing Center. CAPS offers free-of-charge academic support for UNM students. A statistically-proven retention program, CAPS meets the diverse needs of a large student population with individual tutoring, workshops, study groups, drop-in labs, language conversation groups, SI sessions and online tutoring.
TutoringCAPS offers diverse options for tutoring, including individual tutoring, drop-in tutoring labs, study strategies, workshops, and conversation groups. In an individual appointment, students work one-on-one with a tutor on specific problems. In the labs, tutors circulate among student users to provide assistance. Study strategies tutors present effective learning techniques on note taking, test taking, memorization, and more. CAPS also offers a wide range of workshop topics, and language conversation groups in which students practice speaking Navajo, Spanish, Japanese, and other languages. |
Supplemental InstructionSupplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of informal weekly review sessions in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for exams. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills. An SI leader, assigned to a particular course, attends class, takes notes, and facilitates the SI sessions. The sessions focus on not only what to learn, but also how to learn. These collaborative learning environments encourage students to engage each other in order to better understand the material. |
Writing CenterThe Writing Center offers peer tutoring in a positive, relaxed environment. Tutors will work with students on any stage of the writing process, from generating and organizing ideas to revising essays and improving grammatical skills. The Writing Center also provides workshops for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as bilingual tutors to help English-as-a-Second-Language students with standard English usage and composition. |
Online ServicesThe CAPS website offers a variety of online tutoring, learning, and academic resources including tutorials, sample problems with solutions, study and writing guides, as well as options to submit questions to tutors and papers to the Online Writing Lab (OWL). It also connects students to Smarthinking™, a national online tutoring center offering one-on-one tutoring for math, the sciences, Spanish, writing, and more. |
CAPS Announcements & News
Mondays, 12:30p to 3:30pm in Ortega Hall 124 (The Hub, Language Learning Center)
The Portuguese Writing Drop-Lab gives students a place to work on their compositions, as well as reading, for Portuguese classes. In the various Writing Drop-in Labs, you can work on writing in Spanish, Navajo, or Portuguese. The labs are designed to help students who are working on acquiring writing skills in these languages. A completed draft is not necessary! The Drop-in Labs are a place to write: bring everything that you need to work on your writing assignments in the lab; a tutor who is a skilled writer in the target language will be close by to provide assistance.
CAPS online Services will also be unavailable until Monday October 19th. If you require academic assistance during this time, please check out Smarthinking™, a Washington, D.C. based organization that provides online tutoring and academic support for university students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in various common courses. Registration to Smarthinking is free for UNM students.
