About the Writing Center @ CAPS

Writing Resources for Graduate Students

For any graduate student, being able to share and discuss your ideas and work is an invaluable part of the writing process. The Writing Center @ CAPS provides, for graduate students, a forum for talking about and receiving feedback on your writing. Graduate students work with fellow graduate students, with appointments focusing on any stage of a project, from planning your research to putting the final touches on a piece of writing.

Graduate students in different disciplines, and even within a single discipline, make use of a number of a diverse genres of writing- literature reviews, scientific papers, lab reports, grant applications, conference presentations, peer reviews, and many others. Often, one of the most difficult aspects of transitioning to graduate school out on an undergraduate or professional background is a lack of familiarity with the conventions and standards of such forms of writing. Working with a CAPS tutor can help you in the process of orienting yourself in the world of post-grad writing.

We encourage visits from students working on theses and dissertations. Please be realistic, however, about what can be covered in a 25- or 50-minute session. In appointments focusing on surface issues such as sentence structure, 5 to 10 pages is as much as can generally be covered in a single appointment.

Note: We also provide writing resources for undergraduate students.
