CAPS Privacy Policy

The Center for Academic Program Support ("CAPS") respects the privacy of the personal information you give us, such as your name, street address, telephone number and email address, as well as any other personal information you may provide. The following policy is intended to explain how we treat this information.

Please note that official University of New Mexico policies may supersede this privacy policy. For more information, please see UNM Business Policy 2500.

Security

We take every precaution to protect our users' information. When you submit sensitive information via the website, your information is protected both online and offline. CAPS cannot guarantee that these efforts will always be successful and, therefore, users must assume the risk of a breach of University privacy and security systems. Individuals are advised to be discreet and cautious in their use of our systems.

Traffic Data

Each time a visitor comes to the CAPS website, we collect some basic technical information, including, for example, the visitor's domain name (i.e., the ISP from which the user is logged on). We use software to keep track of traffic to our sites and derive information such as the location from which the traffic originates and which particular pages within the CAPS website are being viewed and for how long. After we analyze this information, we discard it. We use IP addresses and browser detection to analyze trends, administer the site and help diagnose problems with our system software and servers. Unfortunately, because some of our online services are controlled and administered by another UNM department, we cannot guarantee that IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.

Use Of Cookies and Sessions

A cookie is a small amount of data that is sent to your browser from a Web server and stored on your computer's hard drive. Currently, CAPS does not use cookies. In the future, they may be used in a limited way to assist in the delivery of information provided by our custom web-applications, such as myCAPS and myAnswer. In the event that CAPS starts to use cookies more widely, they will never be used to track websites you visit other than the CAPS website. Some parties use cookies to view sites you visit other than their own to assess your "viewing habits." CAPS will never subscribe to this practice.

A session is a collection of variables created and stored by a Web server to keep track of your individual preferences. CAPS uses sessions on its website, and makes every effort to handle and store this information securely. After you leave the CAPS website, your session information is destroyed.

Information Sharing

We do share user and aggregated information with the University of New Mexico's Office of Institutional Research.

Other Disclosure Of Personal Information

CAPS will not otherwise disclose or make use of personal information without consent of the user except (i) as described in this privacy policy, or (ii) as required by law, court order or as requested by other government or law enforcement authority. This policy does not protect information you post to any online bulletin board, chat room, newsgroup or other public forum within the CAP website.

Other Sites

The CAPS website may contain links to sites on the Internet operated by others. CAPS cannot control and is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of such other web sites.
